(Sub)Tropic Thunder

Subtropic Thunder ATX

Subtropic Thunder ATX

I’ve long said I wanted to live in the tropics…

When I stepped outside, moments ago, to take a gander at the torrential downpour and thunderstorm underway, it struck me: I’ve made it! Well, I’m in the subtropics anyway.

I was hugged by a softly humid 92 degrees (F), I was surrounded by a lush and dense greenness, and – despite the mosquitoes feasting on me – I was smiling. Few things beat achieving your dreams. :)

In fact, I suppose the only contender would be those pleasant surprises you never dared to hope for, or even thought to wish for… Success and Serendipity – what a lovely pair of accessories to Life’s milieu!

Texan Relocation – Update 5

Mosaic Austin

Mosaic Austin

I have a friend – a sort-of cousin among a family of friends, in that we’ve known each other a long time through mutual friends, though never developed a close kinship, and yet maintain a familial bond – who moved down here a few years ago. Through some technical difficulties, we lost touch a couple months ago, and we finally reconnected last Saturday. Let me just say, oh what sweet relief! Although I’m sleeping on the couch, my days of couchsurfing have come to an end, as my gracious friend, and a pair of equally hospitable roommates, have extended me an indefinite welcome.

I am so grateful for the generosity of the couchsurfing hosts I’ve stayed with these past couple weeks, and I am so relieved to be rid of the perpetual search for lodging. I collected my belongings from the first host’s shed, and now have all my few bits of stuff in one place. I even unpacked a couple things! It’s a wonderful thing to be able to go grocery shopping, and I never thought I’d so enjoy cooking and cleaning!

There were also some technical difficulties with the transmission of my business plan to the business loan guy at the credit union, so that got pushed back a little, but I’m hoping to hear from him in the next day or two. I’ve got my eye on a house I’d love to go look at… Just gotta get that funding approved!

I went ahead and posted a craigslist ad for house-call doggie nail trims a few days ago, and I got a response today! :D Hopefully more will follow… I also spoke to a woman at the dog park recently about her new pooch, and she might contact me for more training tips. :) I’ve made up a couple fliers – one about training, and one about nail trims, that I will post around the neighborhood once I pick up some printer paper.

I am reminded every day about how happy I am to be here. I finally live in a warm climate! And it’s so gosh-darn beautiful here. :) I’m just thrilled to be making a new home in this marvelous town.

Texan Relocation – Update 4

I’ve been keeping busy working on getting this hostel off the ground. The guys at the local SCORE office have been a huge help. I’ve teamed up with a lovely realtor whom I’m excited to work with. I also met with the guy in charge of business loans at a great local credit union. I submitted a loan application with him yesterday, and then finalized my business plan, and got that out to him today. He’ll present my request to a committee, and get back to me in a few days. *Fingers crossed*!

In addition to the biz, I’m also putting feelers out for some part-time doggy work to bring in a little dough on the side. Nothing there yet…

Aside from all that, I’m still loving it here :) I meet marvelous people every day, and I couldn’t be happier to be here, in Austin. Yay for adventure! :D

This is NOT my photography, but it’s a new favorite pic of mine, with three of my new favorite sights: Austin, its bats, and its Frost Tower :)

I have definitely been enjoying myself :)

Cinnamon and I keep exploring more and more of this town, and she’s sure enjoying it here, too!

Friday, I found some awesome sinks in a public restroom. Saturday, I checked out a rad cafe. Sunday I finally made it down to watch the bats emerge on their nightly departure from beneath the Congress bridge, and then I watched a super brass band. Of course, there have been other events, but those are just a few highlights ;)

Now – Monday – I begin the process of dream actualization…

Wish me well!

Texan Relocation – Update 2

Cool Reprieve

Cool Reprieve

So far, so good :)

I’m crashing with a fabulous couch surfing host, and he even has some space in a shed for me to stash all my stuff! I’ve been getting my bearings; checked out some local bars, inquired about a doggie nail trimming gig, and went swimming with Cin at Barton Springs. The heat is pretty intense, but I’m still loving it :)

I went out to breakfast this morning at a funky little cafe and got sat at a table with a peacock feather pattern, which is my cosmic good omen indicating that I am on the right path. That confirmation of being exactly where I ought to be put a big smile on my face :)

I plan to get busy getting some balls rolling on Monday, but I’ll be taking it easy through the weekend first ;)

Home – anew

Welcome to Texas

Welcome to Texas

A favorite song called “Home” shuffled onto my iPod, moments before I realized I was coming upon the Texas border. For the next ten minutes I was repeatedly overcome with tears of joy :)

I haven’t felt at home in over seven months, and I’ve never before acted on a dream as grand as this one. (Not to mention my ongoing love affair with adventures in new locations.) I can’t quite express how contented I feel, simply being in the state of my soon-to-be new home :)

I’m a little afraid I might lose it tomorrow when I land in my new home-city…

Look out, Austin – I’m coming home! :D
